Lately there seems to be a load of gurus and eBooks announcing the death of Google and trumpeting the advantages of Social Media traffic.  I received three emails from one "guru" in the last 2 days on the subject and while I agree that the amount of visitors to sites like Facebook is staggering, and while this traffic presents opportunities to promote my home business,  I'm in no hurry to abandon my Search Engine Marketing strategies.  As for Pay Per Click, well, I don't do it on Google anymore, and i tried it on Facebook and I'm seriously underwhelmed.

Let's get one thing straight.

There is an enormous difference between traffic and targeted traffic.

Search engine traffic is laser targeted traffic, in as much as somebody looking for a specific answer to a specific problem has gone looking for that answer on a search engine (eighty percent of the time they use Google).  Facebook traffic (or Twitter, or My space or whatever the flavor of the day is) is another beast entirely.

People use sites like these to socialize, and connect.  They're not looking for answers they're looking to relax.  All my kids use Facebook extensively and if you examine what they're using it for, unless you have a product or service aimed at young adults/teenagers and you're prepared to pay for Facebook advertising, it beats me how you could possibly launch an advertising campaign that would deliver a reasonable return on Investment.

There is an argument used by network marketers that says sites like Facebook are great networking tools and I agree that they, but here's the rub.  Online networking is a skill that has to be learned and polished and it's very labor intensive, whereas SEO is a skill that has to be learned and polished, but once mastered guarantees regular traffic.

Perhaps Alex Goad in his eBook Affiliate Payload hit upon the best use of Facebook which involved the combination of CPA offers and the Facebook games that are so popular and it  is something that I have on a long list of nice to try ideas.

The bottom line is this – Social networking sites are very popular and have loads of traffic,whereas Google is a hugely popular  search engine that people go to when they want to "look something up on the Internet"  Social Media sites can't provide that service.

All of my planned marketing campaigns now start with my Search Engine strategy.  Everything else is an add on.

Home business opportunities are presented in any many forms online, many with much hyperbole, great sales copy, alluring screen shots of Clickbank accounts and the obligatory pictures of fast cars, sandy beaches and pretty girls in bikinis.

(I have a friend who says he can measure a sites scam level by the number of pictures of Big Houses fast cars and pretty girls – if a site has all three he says it's a dead set scam – you might like to remember that measurement when you're looking around)

Before you part with your hard earned cash getting in on the latest "hot" home business opportunity, you need to ask yourself some very important questions.
 

1. What exactly is the business opportunity advertised?
2. Do you have the necessary skills and experience to profit from the business opportunity or are you going to be reliant upon training from the program
3. How much money are you prepared to spend on advertising the business opportunity
4. Can you work the business opportunity into your existing online sales funnel or do you need to start from scratch with it?
5. Who are the business opportunity owners, where do they live and what is their current online reputation.

In short, take a deep breath and really analyze what is on offer – is it training to build and grow your own business? or is it part of some mythical forced matrix or money power line that is almost certainly illegal.

There are great business opportunities online – and not everything will be a good fit for everyone to succeed with any business opportunity you need to find something that fits your own profile and knowledge base – if for example you play guitar you may be able to develop a website about guitar playing and work in affiliate links and a newsletter with products like Jamorama (a Clickbank product).

On the other hand, you may be an instinctive team builder and networker and MLM business opportunities may appeal to you, then do some research get involved in social media and start the process of building your business  with reasonable expactations of what can realistically be achieved in the short and medium terms.

The truth is that here is a business opportunity that fits your personality, your experience and your goals.  The flip side of this is that there are literally hundreds of alleged business opportunities that are designed with one thing in mind – to seperate you from your cash.

To succeed in this business you need to undertake some basic training in specific fields, you need to set reasonable goals and you need to work consistently and diligently towards those goals.  No amount of hype or pictures of pretty girls and fast cars should ever distract you from the truth.

Legitimate Home businesses take time effort and there is some learning involved.

There is no magic bullet or secret button to push.

You just have to do the hard yards and the hard yards aren't really that hard – learn how to blog, learn HTML, learn SEO, start building a contact list and recommend quality products and services.

The more I use WordPress, the more I wonder why it took me so long to be convinced by it.
One of the great things about WordPress is the handy plugins made available by developers to do all sorts of exciting stuff.

Some of the very best plug ins are the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) plugins freely available  from developers.

I have been using Allin One SEO and it's a great plug in -used and recommended by some of the real SEO heavies like Alex Goad and Brian Johnson.

I don't demonstrate this feature in the video – but if you make a blog post and then switch to edit you'll fine the Platinum SEO Pack  editing features towards the bottom of the page.

This is just another string to your bow as you promote your on line business -  opportunity, but a very important one nevertheless.  It won't give you #1 ranking on Google, but  it will help.

And in case you're wondering – yes I did pick up the spelling mistakes and fixed them up.
 

O.K.  I confess I'm no Twitter guru but it is an intriguing medium and presents a raft of possibilities for Home Business opportunities.
First and foremost, this post was firstly prompted by Tim Linden's post on his blog "Yes I unfollowed you on Twitter". As his wont – Tim made perfect sense and made me think about something I frankly have not paid enough attention to.  That is whose posts I was viewing in Twitter and whose post's I wanted to see.
I was still thinking about his when I watched a great video from Kim Roach about adswapping and how she networked an adswap through Twitter.
Whoa hang on a minute – she negotiated an Adswap through Twitter!
She created a conversation, she followed up in a polite manner and she did a mutually beneficial business deal.
There it is – how to use Twitter responsibly, ethically and profitably in one video talking about something else entirely.  It blew me away.  It is just common sense, but sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees.
Inspired by Kim's video I went back to Twitter with the intention of creating some real conversations and I was instantly hit by the drivel coming from some of the people I was following.  One person would make a post every five minutes stating exactly the same thing (obvious bot), another "professional marketer" made12 posts in the space of about 3 minutes – all of which contained an affiliate link, another bot informed me of bargains to be had shopping at discount stores in America.
Who are these people and how on earth did I end up following them?
I think I know how – it is considered wise to follow people who follow you – the more you appear on peoples lists the more likely you are to be "followed" by their followers.  This may be OK if you are working in a specific niche- like Guitar lessons or fishing, but when you are working in a field as large and varied as Internet Marketing, you attract all the Tweet bots aimed at getting you to follow their owners.
It boils down to this, as it always does, Internet Marketing is a people business.  No amount of automation and technology can replace the connection between two like minded people or between a person with a genuine need and somebody else with a genuine solution.
Used in the right fashion ala the Kim Roach method, Twitter can be a powerful networking tool, but misused and it is just another way of marking you as unprofessional.  Spam is spam no matter what the medium.
I've already started un-following people I can see no obvious connection with, I suggest that you do the same.
Start using Twitter to create Home Business opportunities, not blast the message out to people who don't care.

The best opportunity for home business may be off line rather than online.

Finding a legitimate home business opportunity is a difficult process given that there is so much hype and misinformation on line.

The trouble is that many home business opportunities are legitimate in as much as they present a legitimate opportunity to the prospect, however, the claims of earning capacity and workload are in many cases grossly over exaggerated.

2. High Yield Investment programs – these dodgy schemes are doomed to fail.  Typically they promise massive returns on investment and promise to pay you big commissions on referrals.  They are ponzi schemes pure and simple reliant upon a constant stream of money from new players to pay the interest to existing “investors.  Run do not walk from anybody who presents such a scheme to you as a home business opportunity.
3. Doublers/Cyclers operate on a similar premise in as much as they promise to cycle your money providing you can find other unsuspecting victims to part with theirs.  Again, do not touch such a scheme
4. MLM programs that don’t offer a tangible product that is of value to you.  There are some good MLM programs out there selling all sorts of Berry Juice,and health supplements, but the bottom line is if the product does nothing for you why on earth would you recommend it to somebody else.  This is the golden rule for all MLM home business opportunities – ask yourself a simple question – is the product good for me and would I buy it if I didn’t have the opportunity to get compensated for it
5. Paid Surveys.  OK there are lots of Paid Survey companies that will pay you for your opinion, but you will never make a living out of taking paid surveys – and you should never pay for a list of paid survey companies – you can fine the information for free if you spend a little time looking.
6. Anything that says they do all the work for you.  The only work they’re likely to do is pocket your money

Having dispensed with the hype driven part of the market what are you left with if you want to build a legitimate online home based business?

• Affiliate Marketing
• Private Label resell rights
• Product development

These are the real legitimate home business opportunities available online to you today and grabbing hold of these opportunities and profiting from them is not that difficult and will involve some expense, principally in the areas of research and skill development.
